HOW TO PLAY

1. The Objective

ULTIMATE GOAL: Be the player to win the most points at the end of the game.

NUMBER OF PLAYERS: 4 per table. However, if you have more than 4 players, you can team up or swap people in, or start another table (8, 12, etc.)

WIND ROUNDS & PLAYER POSITIONS: There are four wind rounds in a game, beginning with East, followed by South, West and North. Also, players sit around the table in specific positions. (See Setup under “Assigning Seats” for more details)

SCORING POINTS: Points are scored by collecting specific groupings of tiles, and by being the first player to group all of their tiles together to make a winning hand and going MAHJONG.

HOT TIP

Mahjong is inherently social, and playing a full game can take a long time!

In my family, it was common to have what’s essentially a ‘beginner’s table’ and a ‘big leagues’ table of aunties & grandparents.

It should go without saying, that if you’re playing at the grown-ups table, you better bring your A game. And your money.
